Write for us
Southern Journal welcomes considered pitches about the South's landscapes, architecture, foodways, local histories and community life. We want a specific subject, a sharp question and a reason the story matters beyond a familiar regional image.
What makes a good pitch
Propose one story rather than a broad theme. Tell us what the piece would examine, what makes the angle distinct and what readers could understand better after reading it. Useful pitches distinguish local detail from general claims and avoid treating one experience as representative of a whole region.
What to send
Include a working title, a short outline, the intended reader and a brief note about your connection to the subject. If a proposal depends on sources, access or images, describe what you expect to use without implying that material is already available when it is not.
How to propose it
Send your proposal through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Please do not send a completed article unless it has been requested. A pitch is a proposal, not a guarantee of publication.
A region is never just its reputation.
Southern Journal looks at what people make, keep and change, without mistaking a familiar image for the whole story.
